365 Project, Day 182

July 1st is both selfie day and the half way point of the 365 Project.

Today marks the half way point of my 365 Project of taking and posting a photograph each day to explore and further my artistic growth. I have the privilege of shooting weddings, events and portraits almost everyday, but in those opportunities, I’m telling someone elses story in a way that suits them. This project allows me to try different methods and techniques, perfecting them first before adding them to my repertoire to use with my clients. It also satisfies my need to continue to grow as a photographer, by seeing and capturing things in a new and different way.

A photographer also ‘exposes’ themselves when they display what they shoot for their own satisfaction. This part of the 365 Project is much less clear to me, since I don’t know what others see or how they process my vision. I wonder what others have learned, or at least summarized about me, from my work? What are some of the things that I’ve inadvertently revealed about myself? This would be incredibly interesting, since the only thing that I know that I revealed to the world as a part of this project are “The 10 Things You Didn’t Know About Me.”

The 365 Project is a significant evolution of my photography in a few different ways. In one large way I think that I see light differently, understanding more about what separates good from great light outside of the controlled environment of the studio.

My photography is also about much more than just light, it’s more about people, and how I relate to people continues to change along the way. It always shocks and amazes me how many people respond to a camera, trembling in fear, as if it were the soul-catcher it was believed to be by less enlightened people. Often times after a short conversation or explaining my project to them, I get wonderful images that please both the subject and myself. For those that decline, I use to not think about them at all, however now I kind of feel sorry that they missed out on being part of truly special project, and once in a lifetime moment that we could have created together.

I look forward to the second half of the year. I wonder how I will continue to evolve, work with light and capture images, especially ones of my favorite subject, people.
