365 Project, Day 178

Lumix DMC-FZ28, ISO 200, 10.2mm, f/3.6, 1/100 sec

This morning I found myself in the western Detroit suburb of Canton at an IKEA for breakfast, (a much longer story than I chose to go into right now).  I honestly cannot decided if I’m more fascinated with the concept of IKEA or the people that shop at IKEA.

IKEA is a 61 year old Swedish company that specializes in “ready-to-assemble” furniture.  That’s right walk through the IKEA showroom, see the furniture that you like, write down the product number.  This part operates very much like multiple other stores across the country, and up to now it’s only IKEA modern, whimsical designs and the ability to make something named after a Swedish town an irresistible buy, that sets it apart from it’s competitors.  IKEA goes a step further by having you locate your own furniture in the warehouse using the product code, place it yourself on your shopping chart and then after paying for it, loading it into your vehicle for transport so that you can put it together yourself.  For all this self help privilege you get what amounts to a 10% discount.

The only thing I believe that surpasses this are the IKEA shoppers, or what I would refer to as IKEA Big Game Hunters.  This people completely disregard all the the IKEA imposed do-it-yourselfness and buy all the odds and ends, nicknacks and trinkets that make your college freshman’s 243 square foot college dorm feel like the Palace of Versailles.

Either way IKEA is addictive, if you’ve been once most people find reasons to go again and I haven’t figured out if that is the brilliance of IKEA or the dedication of the IKEA Big Game Hunter.
